Energy Boosting foods: Five foods to give you an instant lift

Step away from the cafetière – if you need an early morning (or afternoon) pick-me-up, these five energy boosting foods are perfect for putting a spring back in your step.

A handful of raw, unsalted nuts can help banish the afternoon slump. Soaking these in warm water overnight makes them easier to digest by breaking down phytic acid and neutralising enzymes. This helps your body to absorb those all-important healthy fats and nutrients. To go that extra mile, pack a portion of trail mix complete with almonds, walnuts and pecans when you’re on the go for a guilt free snack.

Iron delivers oxygen to your cells, helping you feel more alert. Fresh spinach is full of plant-based iron, so a simple veggie salad made with its leaves is a great lunchtime choice. Dress with a squeeze of lemon juice – the vitamin C kick will help your body to absorb the iron more effectively. Alternatively blend fresh baby spinach leaves with other green-goodness (apple and avocado) to create an energy boosting smoothie.

Salmon is an excellent source of the nutrients that help convert food into energy, making it the perfect topping for your spinach salad. This oily fish packs a punch of omega-3, which is known to alleviate fatigue. Flake a cooked fillet onto your lunch for some extra niacin, protein, riboflavin and vitamin B6.

What do iron, potassium, magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin D all have in common? Two things: they can boost energy levels and are all found inside sweet potatoes. Toasting a slice of sweet potato instead of bread is another big food trend for 2017 and a great way to incorporate this healthy carb into your breakfast. Simply thinly slice it, pop it in the toaster and spread with your favourite nut butter for an energising start to the day. Almond is our favourite.

This wholesome side dish is packed with manganese: the mineral that helps turn carbs and protein into energy. Cook a cup of brown rice until it’s tender and pack it in a tupperware container, along with some salmon and steamed spinach for a filling lunch that will combat that sluggish feeling and keep you going all afternoon.
