Exercising with friends

Stay motivated to keep fit by doing exercise with friends

When most of us have so little free time in-between work and family obligations, choosing whether to meet a friend or head to the gym can be a tough call. But why should we pick between the two? Exercising with friends is a great way to kick-start a new workout plan, stay motivated and catch up on the gossip all at the same time. Here are our suggestions for making the most out of having a keep fit buddy.

1. Join a class

From Pilates and yoga to spinning and total body conditioning, it’s always more fun with two of you. Get a local class pass to try out a few different exercises or pick your favourite and make it a regular event. You can encourage each other on those days when you ‘think you might just skip tonight’ and help each other master those tricky techniques too.

2. Go for a jog

Hate running solo? Meet up with a friend in a local park and jog together. Register for a fun run or half marathon, which will give you a goal to work towards and provide the ultimate incentive to get out of bed on those colder mornings.

3. Dancing

Just like your Saturday night out (but more tomorrow-morning friendly), a dance workout such as Zumba or Hip Hop will help you shake the tension out of your muscles, burn calories and improve co-ordination. Find a workout video online, call your friends over and go for it. Giggling guaranteed.

4. Resistance training

It’s easy to modify your everyday resistance training to include two people. Hold an exercise ball between your backs and squat. Try doing a pelvic bridge with your knees bent 90 degrees and feet pressed together. Or, hold either end of a resistance band and take it in turns to squat. The added resistance of your friend’s body weight will give you a heightened core workout.

5. Team sport

Taking up a team sport is the most social exercise of all. Go with a pal, meet new people and brush up your skills. Joining an amateur netball, hockey or football team will provides a once-a-week full body workout and is a great way to get to know like-minded people in your neighbourhood.
