We all know that age-old saying that beauty comes from within and here at GP Nutrition we subscribe to that school of thought two-fold: Not only do we believe that beauty stems from who you are and embracing your individuality, but we know that what we put into our bodies is just as important as what we put on it when it comes to keeping your skin looking and feeling beautiful. Essentially, you can’t out moisturise a bad diet!
The skin is the body's first line of defence, it produces vitamin D, maintains body temperature and helps Protect you from environmental nasties - pollution. Whilst a lot of us moisturise daily, splurge on skincare products and treat ourselves to the occasional facial or skin treatment it’s also vital that we also feed our skin from within with the right nutrition. But what vitamins, minerals and nutrients are actually good for our skin?
When it comes to skincare and nutrition there’s so much information available from so many different sources that it can be overwhelming and downright confusing sometimes. So we got our in-house Nutritionist to break it down and focus on the key nutrients essential for healthy glowing skin:
This vitamin is made when sunlight is absorbed by your skin – the sunlight causes cholesterol in the skin to convert to vitamin D 🤓. Vitamin D is then absorbed by your liver and kidneys and transported throughout the body to help create healthy cells – including healthy skin cells. Studies have shown that vitamin D may even help to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis.
From the end of summer until spring most of us living in the UK don’t get enough vitamin D because of our gloomy British weather. We can boost our vitamin D levels through our diet with foods such as oily fish, red meat, egg yolks and mushrooms but we’ll still struggle to get enough through food alone. This is where a high-quality supplement comes in; the NHS actually recommends that adults supplement their diet with at least 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily during the autumn and winter months.
Hydration and healthy skin go hand in hand, but without a healthy skin-barrier to keep that moisture in, you can end up with scaly, rough and cracked skin. This is where omega-3 fatty acids come in; they help to fortify the skin by ensuring all your cells have healthy membranes; a healthy cell membrane means pollutants and other irritants can’t get int and water can’t get out- meaning soft, supple hydrated skin.
Omega-3s also help to manage oil production, reduce the risk of acne and help reduce premature skin ageing. So no matter your skin concern adding more omega-3’s to your diet will most likely help. If the thought of eating A LOT of salmon or having pockets full of walnuts doesn’t appeal to you then a high-quality omega-3 supplement is the answer. When looking for omega-3 supplements first decide on which source the oil comes from - Fish oil or Algae oil. Next, you want to look out for the levels of EPA & DHA- you want to ensure it has substantial levels of both EPA and DHA (two key types of omega-3 fatty acids) so your body can reap the benefits of both. Vitamin C is found at high levels in both the epidermis and the dermis of your skin. It is a powerful antioxidant and plays a key role in collagen production - that’s why your favourite anti-ageing cream will most likely contain this super vitamin. Ensuring you’re ingesting enough of this collagen-supporting vitamin helps to heal damaged skin and can reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
As we mentioned, a lot of people reach for a vitamin C supplement during the winter months, forgetting about it when the weather warms up.
